Prediction for Tuesday, February 16th,1999
The Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process Will Resume and the "Land for Peace" Wye River Accords Will Be Carried Out AND Relations Between America and China are Going to Take a Turn for the Worse
Introduction:
Predictions for Tuesday, February 16th,1999
Outcome:
(1) While there are no formal signs that the peace process has resumed, other signs indicate that the Clinton policy is on track. See the Prediction 6 for details.
(2) In terms of China, the first part of the prediction is yes, certainly U.S.-China relations have taken a turn for the worse, though President Clinton is not budging from his China policy.
Evaluation of the second part of the prediction: yes but not a strong yes. The issue of Taiwan joining the U.S.-sponsored Theater Missile Defense (TDM) system and the reports of a PRC missile buildup in Fujian across the Taiwan Straits from Taiwan have increased Cross Straits tensions but not to the point of crisis.
Basis for the Prediction:
(1) The funeral of King Hussein of Jordan was a great peace-making event masterminded by President Clinton. Leaders from most Arab countries and Israel were there --- busy shaking hands. An augury for peace noted in the Arab media was that Sara Netanyahu shook hands with Suha Arafat --- breaking a taboo.
(2) With President Jiang Zemin's trip to the US in November 1997 and President Clinton's to China in June 1998 it looked like a strong Sino-American "strategic partnership" was taking off.
But on January 20, 1999, in his State of the Union speech, Clinton announced support for an East Asian "Theatre Missile Defense" (TMD) to be built at a cost of US$6.6 billion. Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui signed on even before there were papers to sign. There is fear in many circles concerned that this could bring Cold War II to East Asia.
